Although adults do have food allergies, most of the patients are children. This is because children try different types of food and it’s when their bodies react to that certain allergen (allergy causing food). There are many speculations of the causes of food allergies. Theories of causes includes environmental, child’s immune system readiness for complex protein, type of antibiotics that children are exposed of and vaccines with high levels of protein. Although there is no fixed cause, the best thing to do when a child or a person is known to have food allergies is to avoid the allergens. There are even overly sensitive patients that even touching and inhaling the food could cause allergic reaction. So it is best that all family members and even friends should be aware if someone is allergic to a certain food. This is to avoid providing or offering the food to the person.
There are different kinds of food allergies. The most common are listed below. You can check if you or someone you know is allergic to the specific food by being aware of its symptoms as well. 1. Egg Allergy – this type of food allergy is common to children. The body’s reaction to eating the egg white and egg yolk could range from mild to severe. Common symptom of egg allergy is swelling of soft tissues in the eyelids, tongue, lips and all over the face; difficulty to breath; hives and abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Serious allergic reaction could be anaphylactic shock where all the body systems reacts negatively causing death. It is best that the person should avoid eating anything that contains eggs even if it is not the main ingredient in the food. 2. Milk allergy – is another allergen and this is usually referred to a cow’s milk. Symptoms for milk allergies include skin rashes, diarrhea, constipation, hives, vomiting, and constipation. There are also serious allergic reaction such as wheezing, sudden death, and atopic dermatitis among a few. 3. Peanut allergy – the symptoms and signs may be the same as the milk and egg allergy but this refers to eating peanuts. This is considered as the number one allergy that causes death that is food related in America. This is not similar to nut allergies as the same comprise almost all kinds of nuts. 4. Seafood allergy – this food allergy refers to hypersensitivity to the substance found in fish, shellfish, and crustaceans. The allergic reaction is the same as other food allergies and treatment is also diligent avoidance of the food. Apart from the above mentioned food allergies; there are also other allergies that are neither too common nor rare such as wheat allergy, nut allergy, shellfish allergy and soy allergy. Almost all of these allergies follow the same symptoms and treatment. Some children can outgrow food allergy while others cannot. Awareness is the key to knowing what food allergy one has so that serious body effects could be avoided. |
